Riskcom recently assisted a mining company to revise their fire management plan and within months, the site was attacked by bushfire. Fortunately, without injury to personnel.
Some minor infrastructure damage was recorded and the learnings from this event will be incorporated into the new version of the fire management plan as part of continual improvement from incidents (both internal and external) over time.
In Australia, the bushfire danger period is upon us and accordingly, the risk of fire dramatically increases. Bushfire is a good example of what we term a ‘major un-wanted event’ or MUE. MUE’s are those events that can stop a business in its tracks. They represent what should keep every PCBU and officer awake at night (if their controls are not effective).
Fortunately, at this stage of summer, south-east Australia looks as though it will be spared from a significant risk of fire as was experienced 2 years ago. What about your area?
As always, preparation and planning are the keys to managing risk. If this is true, complacency is the antithesis.
Are you or your business in a bush fire susceptible area and do you have a plan?
What information should be in your plan? Do your people know and understand it?
Do you understand your other business MUE’s and are you critical controls effective?
At Riskcom, we love helping businesses to reduce risk, it’s what we do, and it is what we are passionate about.
